The Commando's Story

This new page is all about our aims to preserve vehicles & appliances.Most members are owners of these remarkable, unique vehicles, the likes of which, may never be seen again?

The Range Rover moved 'upmarket' to the 'luxury' class in the 1990's and these will certainly never appear as a mere fire engine ! They are still converted but mostly into limos. Some have been converted to pick-up trucks for a new life in civvy street. Of course, to many of us this is a great shame as we see them as they were and nothing else.

The Group has been very fortunate to have one of the rare 4 door Commandos built 'donated' from the Falkland Isles Fire & Rescue Service. This appliance was originally a fire/rescue tender but has had the tank and pump removed when the pump expired. This was replaced with a winch on the front bumper where the pump was once fitted. Thanks to the efforts of two group members, this appliance will soon be repatriated into the UK where the engine will be replaced - it blew up on a 'shout' - and be re-kitted as 'in service' as much as possibly near to original configuration.

I have therefore decided to seek out any appliance of interest and request it be 'donated' for preservation on 'loan' to the group.  A member(s) of the group will be appointed as a 'custodian' to make sure it has a home and can be maintained in a serviceable state. The aim? To secure one of each model Range Rover produced in 6x4 fire appliance form.
