Hiya folks, really thinking of purchasing a tacr and want to ask about tax and mot. I am wanting to use it at shows and displays and maybe down the line for fire cover. This may seem like a stupid question but want to make sure i do everything legally before i buy one, do i need to tax it and mot it ? Thanks, Paul

Hi fdnyPaul. Glad you are trying to keep it legal and not get us all into trouble. If your machine has 'Fire Engine' on the V5 and it is over 3.5t MAM (or GVW) then it will be tax and mot exempt. That is to say you must display a valid tax disc but the revenue rate will be zero. Similarly although not needing an mot certificate your vehicle must be legally roadworthy at all times. It is advisable to keep service records for this. Not needing an mot is no excuse for a wheel dropping off! Hope this helps

Hiya Civvy, thanks very much for the reply, I understand a bit better now thanks, takes a while with me lol if I win I will certainly take a look at the v5, from what the chap says who is selling it, it does have a tax disk untill April but its mot exempt. I wonder should I just sell my ford ranger and use this daily, up and down to the station.:)I would deffinately keep it ship shape as I can do a little mechanical work and my mate has a good garage, will give me something to work on while I am not driving the cobra's around at work.

Hi what Civvy has said is right but to stay on the right side of the law it should be registered to a bonafied fire service works fire brigade airfield etc and insured likewise and that will be where you may fall down because the insurers will want ansers to lots of questions and you will also need public liabilaty to use operationally.

Hi. Me again. I won't disagree with what low cat says, even if it is the basis for a long debate. However the thing to remember is that the name on the V5 is the 'registered keeper' who is not necessarly the same as the owner of the vehicle. However the comments concerning public liability are very apt. It is one thing to 'have a go' as a member of the public, quite another to act in a professional capacity. My advice would be, if you see a member of the public with his car on fire stop to help by all means, but hand the driver the extinguisher to put it out himself!

This is good advice, remember the compesation culture that now pervades the country. No one wants to get sued! Is it a TACR1 (4 wheel land rover) or a TACR2 (6 wheel range rover)?
